Willow School Enrichment
Willow School provides qualifying 1st & 2nd grade students with an accelerated math program. Students placed in Odyssey or Challenge math classes are selected based on NWEA scores. High-performing 2nd grade students participate in Odyssey math. This class has students working on math skills one grade level above their peers.
Challenge Math enriches advanced 1st and 2nd grade students using mental math and solving story problems at their grade level. Students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade participate in the P.E.T.S. (Primary Education Thinking Skills) program. Students listen to stories selected specifically to introduce them to different ways of thinking, practice higher level thinking skills, and participate in problem solving activities.
Divergent/Creative Thinking: students brainstorm & create inventions using common objects. For example a glass of grape juice could be used as watercolor paint.
Convergent/Analytical Thinking: students put clues together to solve a problem. For example a story character might see paw prints, a bone, and a leash. After analyzing the clues the students will determine the lost animal is a dog.
Visual/Spatial Thinking: students mentally manipulate shapes. For example a student might be shown a picture of a teddy bear with one paw raised. The student will be asked to choose the picture that shows the teddy bear facing the opposite direction.
Evaluative/Critical Thinking: students base decisions on factual, observable, or measurable considerations resulting from logical inquiry and reasoning. For example, students will be presented with a question such as, “Should a seven year old kid be allowed to ride her bike to school without an adult.” The students would list the pros & cons and use the collected data to make a decision.
Based on teacher observations made during the whole group instruction, students then participate in small flexible-group enrichment activities based on the student’s cognitive strengths.
