Mrs. Beth Palmer - Junior Great Books

Mrs. Palmer works primarily with the Junior Great Books reading program.

The Junior Great Books Program of Interpretive Reading, Writing and Discussion is offered as an enrichment opportunity for students at Churchill School who are excellent readers. This exciting program stresses the enjoyment of literature for its own sake. At the same time, it develops comprehension, interpretive thinking, and oral and written language skills.

In JGB, children are encouraged to ask questions about the meaning of a story and to explore, support, and develop their own insights. Each unit consists of an outstanding story and a series of activities designed to improve thinking skills and help children to share opinions and ideas, especially in their written work.

Students meet for one hour weekly and there is homework. Students are expected to read the stories independently or with a parent at least one more time after the story has been read in our class. They are expected to highlight new vocabulary as well as specific characterizations as defined for each story.

She is in the building on Tuesdays and Thursdays if you wish to contact her. Her phone number is 708-647-2391 and her e-mail is beth.palmer@homewoodsd153.org

Monday
Reminder: Students should be returning their storybook (anthology) from Junior Great Books. The week of May 11-13th is the last time of meeting as I will be working with the fourth grade classes on an Owl Pellet Project. Some students will still need to complete unfinished work in their Student Journal Workbooks. Thanks for a great year!
