The Specials at Millennium School . . . .

allows students to gain experiences and knowledge in a variety of academic areas. Each class is taken for one quarter.

Art

Our 5th and 6th grade art department introduces students to a number of drawing and sculptural techniques and places them within a historical framework. We learn about linear perspective which was established during the Renaissance, and clay pottery which is one of the oldest forms of art. Students are taught a variety of classic and contemporary techniques and encouraged to make their work unique and personal.

Health

The fifth graders at Millennium School are all about food. They study food groups, nutrients and how to read package labels. They also study advertising. A big project in 5th grade is to design and produce a cereal box. The students also learn about hygiene with a BIG emphasis on the importance of hand washing.

The sixth graders at Millennium School study body systems. They learn about the skeletal muscles. They study the nervous, circulatory, and respiratory systems. A highlight of the year is discovering the secrets of the digestive system.

Music

Fifth Grade Music Class is a nine week hands-on exploration of Music. We examine Genre, Notation, Instruments of the Orchestra, and the Music of the Civil War Era through lecture, video presentations, recorders and a variety of other instruments.

Sixth Grade Music Class is a nine week, in depth exploration of the fundamentals of Music including Rhythm, Melody, Tone Color, Texture, Symbols, and the Music of the World. We use lecture, video presentations, and a variety of musical instruments.

Technology

In Technology Special, students will be learning a variety of computer skills. Students will be introduced to proper typing technique while doing daily keyboarding lessons. They will be taking timed typing tests to improve their proficiency while maintaining accuracy. Projects using the Microsoft 2010 Office suite programs of Word, Power Point, Excel and Publisher will be created. Internet safety and cyber bullying will be addressed in each Technology class. Students will learn how to save to and open saved projects from an external flash drive. Classes coming to the computer lab will be creating videos using Windows Movie Maker Live.

Speech and Drama

Through the Speech and Drama curriculum, 6th grade students are introduced to basic speech skills and the fundamentals of dramatic performance. Additionally, the class will focus on appropriate listening for formal situations. These essential skills lay the foundation for future success in school and beyond.
