Gifted/EnrichmentAbout Millennium School's EXCEL ProgramMillennium School EXCEL students meet with Mrs. Katie Nigro, Millennium’s EXCEL teacher, once a week for ninety minutes to extend the reading and language arts curriculum beyond the classroom. Students are exposed to and work with many different genres of literature and reader’s theatre during the EXCEL time. Students utilize a vocabulary program which focuses on Latin stems and analogies as well as enrichment of their vocabulary. Another aspect of the EXCEL class is the concept of combining grammar usage and writing through an artist’s “brushstrokes,” musical rhythm, and a photographer’s “zoom lens” to improve writing.
Students are invited to participate in the EXCEL Program based on reading and language arts achievement test scores from NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) and the OLSAT (Otis-Lennon School Ability Index Test) in addition to teacher surveys.
Millennium School has many enrichment opportunities for all children. Classroom teachers create differentiated lessons to meet the needs of all students. Mrs. Nigro serves as a resource to the classroom teacher’s planning of differentiated learning experiences. Millennium hosts a geography bee, spelling bee and an annual science fair. Millennium also has clubs such as Math Club, Newspaper Club, Chess Club, Technology Club, and Eagle Authors in which students can choose to participate.
Mrs. Nigro can be contacted by e-mail, Katie.Nigro@hsd153.org, or by phone at 708-799-8697.
