Arrival and Dismissal Information
Supervision at Churchill begins at 7:50 a.m. Staff members are on the playground from 7:50 – 8:10 a.m. Parents driving their children to school and dropping off on Center Avenue are reminded to pull forward, past the orange cones, before stopping. This area, along with the paved pad on 190th Street, is marked for attended parking only. Vehicles left unattended will be ticketed by the Homewood Police Department. We also ask that parents do not turn around in the driveways on Center Avenue. This creates a hazardous situation for our students, busses and other drivers.
During inclement weather and/or muddy conditions on our playground, students will come indoors upon arrival at school. Due to the large fields we utilize for playground space, there may be beautiful, sunny days when we must be indoors before school begins. If the fields are muddy, we cannot contain our entire school population on "black-top only."
At dismissal, many of our students have a special meeting spot they have arranged with their parents or carpools. This is a wonderful idea as it is very helpful if students know where they should meet their ride each day. Some of our students, however, are meeting their rides off of school property. This presents a challenge to us as we clear the playground at the end of the school day. If students are waiting for a ride outside of the vision of school personnel, we have no way of knowing if they have met their ride. If you have arranged a meeting place off of school grounds, please reconsider meeting your child(ren) where school personnel can see them. We want to make sure all of our students get home safely.
The school parking lot also presents us with some challenges. Parents are welcome to park and meet their children at their exit doors. Students are not, however, allowed to walk through the parking lot to meet their ride. If you would like to arrange a meeting spot, please be sure it does not involve students walking through the parking lot.
When the bell for dismissal rings, staff members "sweep" the playgrounds, beginning at the back of the school and working around to the front entrance. Students who walk or ride their bicycles home are encouraged to leave school grounds immediately. We want them to make their crossing while the guards are still on duty. If students are still waiting for a ride at the end of the dismissal time, they are brought to the office. If you are running late and don't see your child(ren) at their designated spot, please check with the office.
