Gifted/Enrichment Education
The Homewood Public Schools offer a variety of opportunities for gifted and talented
students. Formal identification of students does not occur until the end of second grade,
however in grades K-2 at Willow School, classroom teachers and specialists provide
enrichment activities. On an individual basis, students are accelerated in their specific
strength areas. Math acceleration is available for advanced students.
The EXCEL (Extended Clustered Learning) Program begins as students enter the third grade.
In grades 3-4 at Churchill School and in grades 5-6 at Millennium School, gifted and talented
students are clustered in each classroom. All classroom teachers have specialized training
in gifted education methods and techniques. They modify the curriculum in content, process,
and/or product to enrich the gifted and talented students. Math acceleration is provided for
advanced students.
In grades 7-8 at James Hart School, students are serviced based on mastery of content in
specific subject areas. Acceleration opportunities are available in math, language arts,
and foreign language. Students may complete a year of high school placement credit in math
and foreign language. The resource specialist provides enrichment activities beyond the
classroom activities
EXCEL students may also participate in district-wide art enrichment, instrumental
and vocal music programs, science fairs, math problem solving, computer technology classes, physical
fitness, and drama.
